Splicing cables between early Autechre and Richard Devine, Nuanae creates sparse dystopian worlds of dysfunctional audio beauty. Asect:Dsect was once tagged as “technically rigorous,” an apt description that also applies to the robust electrical details featured on Clusters And Refractions. Take “OpiAte Parhelion” contrasted with Ae’s “Foil” and “Lineage” versus Devine’s “Itsuko” as starting points. There’s a definitive edge that Nuanae carves, one that is layered with electrical textures and abstract flurries—listen to “Luae” for a dense, relaxed bit that twists static and mechanized clangs into a panoramic whirlwind.
„Opening “Entries” delves through a dark corridor, its windswept clicks and cuts sheared by brittle buzzing tones and industrial shards. Dabbling somewhere in dense IDM cross-hair’s, “Egodystonic” shimmies through glitch and grit, DSP-trickery, and crunched percussive jabs. “Mithraeum” sputters about minimal contortions, a thick ambient-industrial stew that eventually merges into particles of melodic dust and drones. The title track veers into a sonic maelstrom, crystallized noises are triggered in unison with erratic (and tranquilized) electronic bits, leaving scattered layers all about. Low flying downtempo-dub appears on “Flickering Shades,” a microcosm of bass echoes and modular densities that cycle to and from outer space.
